Last year, we rolled out a list of our favorite reads to get you through the long, lean days of Lent. For a couple of book nerds like us, the task was easy - choose five books from among dozens of titles that have made their way onto our list of favorites. This year, however, is a bit tougher.
Episode 27 – Jesus: The Missing Years
We all know the story - a little baby born in a manger goes completely off the radar for 30 years, then bursts onto the scene for 3 years of intense world saving. Seems a bit strange that we know so little about those missing years of messianic preparation, though. Right? Join Dizzy & Ges in this episode for a quick recap of what we know, what we don't, and what we wish we knew about the man we call Jesus (even though that wasn't really his name).
Episode 16 – In the Name of the Dragon, and of the Jedi, and of the Holy Crows…
Have you ever watched Star Wars or Game or Thrones or any of your favorite adventures in film or television (like...Seinfeld?) and found yourself saying, "Damn, I wish there was a church like that one"? Us too! From "vanya sulie" to "valar morghulis" Church Drunk's got you covered this week. Dive in, and may the force be with you!
Episode 13 – Sweet Myth-tery Of Life
We here at Church Drunk believe that mystery is the heart of almost any spiritual pursuit, and that often a good story is the best way of plumbing the depths of mystery. As such, myths and legends hold a special place in our hearts. In this episode we dive into the truth behind stories that are not at all true. Plus, we're keeping it OT as we play a few spirited rounds of Name That Hebrew Scripture Legend...because we are HUGE nerds!
A Word About Boredom, Ordinary Time, and Wrestling With God
So lately I've been grappling with God. Not in, like, a Jacobean angel wrestling kind of way, though that story really takes on new meaning when you tackle it with a spiritual chip on your shoulder, let me tell you. Rather, this round of theological sparring is more of a spiritual exercise, of sorts (pun only... Continue Reading →
Episode 8 – Josh, Biff, & Maggie!
Well, folks, our 40 days of Lent have finally brought us to the foot of the cross on Good Friday. What better way to honor the saving work of our Savior than with a tongue-in-cheek examination of his life through the fictional stylings of Christopher Moore? We've been teasing our Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff episode for weeks, and now it's time to get down to business. Spoilers abound. Consider yourselves warned!
Lamb Preview
An episode back on the podcast, Ges and I discussed miracles both Gospel and modern and whether we think they were "real" or REAL. And I think the "resurrection" miracles are kind of in between the general healing miracles (which totally happened, o ye of little faith) and the BIG ONE - Jesus' resurrection. This... Church Drunk’s Lenten Reading List
We here at ChurchDrunk like words. Words matter. Like, for example, when one says that millions and millions of people showed up for an inaugural event, but photographic evidence shows that perhaps this is not the case...those words suddenly matter! There are other words that matter (many of them spoken by the very same sentient... Continue Reading →
Episode 3 – American Gods
Take a wander through the wormhole with Dizzy and Ges as we cross over to the world that exists "backstage" in American Gods, one of our favorite novels. It's sure to bring out the enlightened bookworm in all of us! Plus, Dizzy gives us an update on our most recent reason to hold onto Pope Hope in this season of Lent.
